The workplace phenomenon having an outsized impact on productivity.
Businesses understand well the impact absenteeism has on productivity – but they are underestimating the impact presenteeism can have, says Southern Cross chief sales and marketing officer Regan Savage. Speaking on Herald NOW Business, Savage described presenteeism as a workplace phenomenonwhereby employees turn up to work while not fully mentally or physically well, leading to a reduction of “around 50% of the productive capacity of an employee”. Savage says presenteeism can impact around 5% of productive hours, with staff turnover another major issue. Regan said a study shows Southern Cross has a 3:1 return on investment on its health insurance group schemes, highlighting that the businesses who “invest professionally, intentionally and purposefully in the health and wellbeing of their people” tend to generate a more productive business.
