Engineering with glass

The Deloitte building recently completed in Christchurch runs parallel to the Avon river which strongly influenced the design of the building. The glass façade was a major part of this building and had large impact on the overall performance. Designed to mimic the curves of the river the glass facade with floor to ceiling glazing allows occupants unrestricted views out to the river and surrounding environment.

Low E Insulating Glass Units were chosen for their neutral blue appearance and high visual light transmission, preventing heat loss and providing a visual connection between the interior and surrounding cityscape. The laminated glass fins have been digitally printed in tiny aqua coloured teardrops altering in and out to give a soft fade in and out at head height. The glass fins also provide designed levels of solar control and glare reduction for user comfort inside the building.

The glass was processed and digitally printed onsite at Metro Performance Glass in Christchurch. The use of Metro Performance Glass EVA lamination provides a durable external lamination and its superior breakage characteristics increasing the safety aspect of the building.
