"The Orange" is kind of grand play on words, a vibrant commercial building acting as a backdrop to Auckland's historic Orange Coronation Hall, at 145 Newton Rd.
Having scooped the Heritage Award at the 2016 Auckland Architecture Awards, developers Dominion Construction Ltd have sent a message to Auckland City's otherproviders of commercial space - which seems to be "lighten up".
The project brief included refurbishment of the old hall and construction of a mixed-use development beside it - a daring concept blending the past with the present.
The old hall retains its brick exterior and a sophisticated white interior; the new mixed-use building picks up on the Orange theme, with sunscreens and projecting mullions creating a bold statement on the street, says the project manager Tony Smith.
Such risk-taking design work is not generally the norm here in New Zealand.
Our car companies mostly import grey vehicles, which are seen as the safest colour for fleet-leasing.
But this fondness for averaging out human taste also carries the risk of creating "a grey world".
It would have ruled out the likes of the Sagrada Familia, Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower and other great buildings born in controversy. So all credit to Crosson Clarke Carnachan Architects & Tonkin Zulaika Greer Architects in association, and Dave Pearson Architects for brightening up our city with this build.
"The Orange is well worth a drive-by for all commercial architecture geeks and anyone with a passion for Auckland's heritage cannot fail to be captivated by the magic of the old hall," says Smith.
New and are old blended together with The Orange and the Orange Coronation Hall.

The commercial space consists of six loft configurations (1 leased, 5 available). Sizes range from ground space of 43sq m to 53.07sq m and loft spaces consisting of 15.66sq m to 40.05sq m. The building has magnificent views of the Sky Tower, CBD and harbour. Three loft-style commercial spaces have open, wrap-around decks with views towards the city; three have covered deck areas, with views to Waitakeres, the city and harbour.

The Orange Coronation Hall is managed by Collective Hospitality, available for venue hire with catering options. It comprises of three spaces for hire: The Ballroom; The Orange Meeting Room (a former Orange Society Meeting area with wooden panels) and The Supper Room. And soon to be opened, The Regalia Room cafe opening out onto the courtyard.
