Retirement village to replace historic Wellington rugby ground

Contractors have started work on a retirement village on Wellington's former rugby ground on Athletic Park.

The 254-unit development is being built for the Wellington Tenths Trust and will be managed by Summerset Holdings Ltd.

Development manager Erne Joyce says work on stage one of the three-stage development is now underway.

"The first part of stage one involves 20 units, 14 of which are near Adelaide Road."

"The first of the units will be finished by the end of March."

Mr Joyce says none of the units has yet been sold.

"We can't sell any of them until they have been finished."

"But we have a substantial waiting list – there has been lots of interest."

Mr Joyce is unable to say when the entire development will be finished.

"A lot depends on sales, as this type of development is capital intensive."

"Many prospective buyers are also unable to confirm purchases until they sell their current homes."
