This state-of-the-art home caters for every modern-day family's whims. By VICKI HOLDER.
The sophisticated design of this big, luxurious home in Orakei puts the owners in total control, maximising pleasure and minimising effort. A host of alluring living spaces are laden with the latest technology systems, so city restaurateurs Stephen and
Stephanie Chan can fine-tune the mood to suit any occasion.
Perched high above Hobson Bay, the home looks serenely out across the heated pool to a breathtaking panorama of the city and harbour. The Chans and their neighbours on three adjoining properties took care to ensure each of the homes they built complemented one another without restricting views in any way.
The general look of the homes was important and so, too, was their position on the land. The Chans had a clear idea of how they wanted to live and they presented architect Brent Hulena with a stringent list of requirements. With builders Precision Construction and interior designer Adrian Nancekivell, this talented team has created a highly specified living environment of exceptional quality.
As a smart home, it's fitted with a central computer system that controls the security, lighting, heating, music and blinds from small, user-friendly touch pads on the walls.
Entry to the home is dramatic. You feel as if you're making a grand entrance as you sweep past reflection ponds and head up the central, polished concrete stairs to the main living area. Here, an entire wall of this vast room opens to a covered terrace, where the view is particularly impressive at night. The house is designed so other neighbouring homes simply disappear.
At one end of the room, tall dark oak cabinetry wraps around a huge white Carrara marble island bench that offers a huge work surface for cooking.
The kitchen is well equipped with a robust, free-standing oven and a wall oven beside an Amana fridge. There's also an enticing glass-fronted beer fridge for refreshments below the sinks.
For entertainers, the built-in storage is extravagant and impressive. In the main living room and the second lounge near the entry, good looking, floor-to-ceiling, built-in cabinetry keeps the clean, uncluttered aesthetic while providing masses of storage. In the upstairs bedroom suites, magnificent walk-in wardrobes are built with amazing attention to detail. A multitude of partitioned oak drawers with glass fronts and numerous shelves give places to stash everything imaginable.
While there are two more bedrooms that share a beautiful bathroom on another level, downstairs a large office with exterior access is handy for the executive who wishes to work from home.
State of the art and generous to a fault, this luxuriously comfortable home is a taste of paradise in the city.
