Three generations of the Singh family moved here from next door - and went up in the world - when they settled here three years ago.

This is the double-storey brick, weatherboard and tiled-roof home that Harpinder Singh and his wife Indu Bala built for their sons Gurpinder (12) and Harman (10) and their grandmother, Harpinder's mother Surjit Kaur.

This family previously lived next door in a single-level home and property with subdivision potential. After two years there, they sold, subdivided and built this sky-high family home, complete with a rear garden.

Harpinder and Indu designed this home with multi-generational flexibility in mind. They located a bedroom and bathroom on the entry level, along the hall from the family's main living area. "For a family with an elderly person, it means that they can sleep here. They don't have to go up the stairs," says Harpinder.

For now though, the family hasn't needed that degree of flexibility. The guest bedroom is just that - styled, furnished and equipped for visitors. It is located next to the internal access into the double garage and opposite the bathroom and adjacent laundry.

This bathroom is more than just a powder room with its discreet toilet, wall-hung vanity, corner shower and half-height marble-style wall tiles.

The open laundry is next to the bathroom, installed into the recess under the stairwell so that is unseen from the living area. The laundry floor tiles are the same high-gloss soft mink colour that Harpinder and Indu chose for their kitchen. It's a choice that has given this central food preparation area its own definition within the carpeted lounge and dining area.

These glamorous high-gloss floor tiles are one feature of the palette of materials Harpinder and Indu chose together for their home.

Their kitchen has soft grey wood-grain cabinetry and granite benches, including the stand-alone island bench.

Additional cabinetry and pantry space on a wall by the hallway adds functionality to the space because it enables Indu and her mother-in-law Surjit to cook together here with ease.

The boys usually snack at the breakfast bar here. The family eats around the dining table with its private view out to a vegetable garden, from which Surjit will pick her seasonal greens, capsicums and chillies.

After school and after dinner, the separate lounge designed especially for the boys on the landing off the stairs is their popular bolthole. They also each have a desk in their open study areas on either side of the balustrades at the top of the stairs.

All the bedrooms are doubles here.

The boys share one room, their Grandma is in the next bedroom and these three all use the large family bathroom with its golden wall tiles and inset bath.

Harpinder and Indu have their own space down the hallway at the front of the house. Their master quarters include a tiled en suite in soft grey tones and a well-equipped walk-in wardrobe.

Sweeping views from here take in the Hunua Ranges, an outlook they both appreciate.

Before building this home, Harpinder and Indu sold their home next door and were lucky enough to rent it back for the six month duration of this build. It gave them the opportunity to supervise the detail of the construction in their busy full-time working lives.

Now they're moving to a larger home as they look ahead to the two boys reaching their more independent, teenage years.
