Development in Havelock North

One of the oldest orchards in the Havelock North district could be bulldozed into history. Owned by local draper John Rich in 1894, the 8.8ha orchard, now zoned residential, is for sale by tender through Rollo Vavasour of Bayleys. The orchard includes a 100-year-old cottage and a packing shed built of mud and straw. The pear trees, planted 101 years ago, still produce great fruit, according to the orchardists who own the property, which occupies a key position on the outskirts of Havelock North in Hastings District Council’s biggest urban development area.
