Gordon Simpson was able to watch his brand new penthouse apartment at The Dylan being built. He lives in The Surrey apartment building on Surrey Cres, so just had to look across Grey Lynn towards the ridgeline of Great North Rd to check on progress.
Gordon bought The Dylan's northeast-facingpenthouse from the plans 18 months ago. Named by developers Urban Collective after a boutique hotel in Amsterdam, all of The Dylan's 24 residences sold early. "I'd walk past for site visits and see the foundations being dug and the concrete poured," he recalls.
But it wasn't until the build was complete that Gordon could appreciate just how magnificent the views are from his Level 5 penthouse. The vista stretches 270 degrees and takes in everything from the Waitakeres, the inner harbour, Grey Lynn Park, the central city and Mt Eden, One Tree Hill and Mt Albert. "We've got all the mountains covered," jokes Gordon. "Somewhere in these views you will find one you like. If you can't find a view here, you're pretty fussy." His favourite is looking west towards the Waitakere ranges, as the sun sets. "You can just watch as the sky changes colour as the sun drops down to the sea."
Unfortunately for Gordon, he hasn't moved into his new penthouse, much as he loves it. He had planned on being here to enjoy the views every evening, but after a milestone birthday he has decided on a sea change, keeping funds free for travelling or new business opportunities. "It's an emotional, tough decision."
Gordon says Urban Collective were fantastic to work with. He chose one of the high-end interior design packages and collaborated on a bespoke electrical plan that best suited his wish for clean lines and zoned areas.
There are high-end fixtures and fittings throughout the building.
Gordon's kitchen has a Caesarstone island benchtop and top-of-the-range appliances, including a Liebherr integrated fridge and freezer, Miele combi and convection ovens, induction cooktop and Asko dishwasher.

In the three bathrooms, vanities are made from black Nero Marquina marble with blackened-steel drawer fronts. The tapware is Zucchetti Pan from Italy.
The master bedroom is sun-soaked, with sliders opening on to a north-facing balcony. Recessed ceiling air conditioning keeps the room the right temperature no matter the time of year. There is copious storage and an en suite with a generous standalone bath.
At the other end of the apartment are two bedrooms, one with an en suite and the other with a semi en suite.
"I wanted it to be handy to the living area, but out of sight. It could be a library for someone if they wanted to put extra shelves in."
Gordon says friends and family are blown away by the outlook and can't believe he doesn't want to move in.
