As a well-known, international art photographer, natural light is important to John Crawford. And this apartment's natural light and its changing intensities throughout the seasons is what he loves about his Auckland inner-city home at 22 Emily Pl.
John specialises in corporate and advertising photography. He bought the two-bedroom apartment in October 2014. "I had been looking for a place in the city for two years," he says.
It was his first apartment. "The saving grace is having the deck. I spend hours out on the deck in the sun, which suits me being a photographer.
"I get the light morning to evening. If I don't live in beautiful light, I get frustrated."
He has expansive views from his deck — Emily Park to the left, along Customs St to the sea, and to the right a corridor of view to Devonport.
As well as the natural light and location, he was captivated by the character of the building, built in the 1920s with his level added in the '80s/'90s.
The previous owner had renovated the eighth-level 12-sq m apartment, adding new bamboo flooring, new kitchen, new bathroom.
It has two large bedrooms, one with an office area that can be shut away behind sliding doors. The living and dining area has a heat pump and opens to the deck.

The kitchen, with its stainless-steel benches and soft-shut cabinet doors, is slightly separated from the open living area by a concrete pillar concealed by timber strips, also houses the pantry.
Past the green-walled kitchen is a large bathroom. Skylights in the bathroom and kitchen bring in natural light.
Ray White agent Gillian Gibson says the apartment is a rare find in the CBD.
"It is a stunning, architecturally designed, spacious, sunny penthouse apartment with indoor outdoor flow on to your private entertainer's balcony." The property will be auctioned on 20 June.
