Youth, 15, charged with murder after Whakatane death

A 15-year-old has appeared in Whakatane Youth Court on a charge of murder after the death of a 17-year-old youth.

The accused is understood to be related to the deceased, who has not been named. He has been remanded in secure custody under the supervision of Child Youth and Family.

Police said they were called to a Whakatane house shortly before 10pm last night, where the 17-year-old was found.

Police and ambulance staff were unable to resuscitate the youth who had a serious stab wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Eastern Bay of Plenty area commander Pat Tasker said police were not looking for any other people in relation to the incident however they have a number of witnesses to interview and other related inquiry matters to complete over the next few days.

It is expected scene examinations will be fully completed later today.
