Whether you're heading out on the town to celebrate, drowning your sorrows quietly or just planning a big night in front of the television, we've got you covered with the ultimate guide to enjoying the election results.

In the lead-up to tonight's political showdown, the Weekend Herald called on the
help of celebrity chef Michael Van de Elzen and one of Auckland's top bartenders, James Millar, to help you design a politics-themed menu.

The food

Restaurateur and TV chef Michael Van de Elzen, known for his appearance on Kiwi series The Food Truck, has whipped up some election-themed canapes, inspired by four of the political party's colours. These will definitely have everyone coming back for more.

National
Mini blueberry wholemeal crumbles with Blue Curacao ice cream.

Labour
Red snapper fingers with Romesco and slow roasted tomato relish.

Greens
Green ham with goats cheese whip on wasabi crusted kale crisps.

Act
Butternut arancini with a saffron aioli and candied preserved lemon.

The drinks

Auckland bar Bedford Soda and Liquor is renowned for its fancy cocktail list. Bartender and cocktail maestro James Millar has come up with the perfect tipple to celebrate some of your favourite political parties.

National

Ingredients
15ml Blue Curacao
7.5ml lemon
Top with champagne
Build all ingredients in a champagne flute. Garnish with dry ice.

Labour

Ingredients
30ml gin
15ml dry vermouth
15ml sweet vermouth
5ml honey syrup
Top with cranberry juice
Build all ingredients in a petite highball. Garnish with edible glitter and a monopoly bill, ignited.

Greens

Ingredients
45ml snow pea infused Tequila Blanco
30ml lime juice
20ml kale juice
20ml capitulated syrup (syrup coloured with GMO free green food colouring)
Shake and strain into a chilled salt rimmed Nick and Nora glass. Garnish with four drops of seasme oil.

New Zealand First

Ingredients
30ml dark rum
15ml espresso
Brown sugar
10 drops of chocolate bitters
Stir and strain into a double rocks glass over cubed ice. Garnish with butterscotch cream and place in a chambers smoked with maple wood.

The drinking game

The rules are simple:
Take a swig when anyone says:
• "Hard working New Zealanders"
• "Tax"
• "Clean rivers"
• "$11 billion hole"

The candidates

National

National Party are set to host their election night event at SkyCity Convention Centre in Auckland. Bill English will be there with wife Mary and their kids.

Labour
Labour leader Jacinda Ardern plans on spending the big night at home in Pt Chevalier, Auckland, with family and supporters, before heading to a Labour Party event at Aotea Centre.

Green
Leader James Shaw will be at the official Green Party party at St Matthew-in-the-City in Auckland CBD, with wife Annabel. He will be surrounded by a bunch of supporters, volunteers, current Green MPs and candidates.

New Zealand First
Winston Peters will be at the Duke of Marlborough in Russell.

Maori Party
Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell will be watching the election at Waiteti Marae in his hometown Ngongotaha, just out of Rotorua. Marama Fox is set to be further down the country in Masterton at Te Rangimarie Marae, where she'll be cooking a hangi for 150 people.

Act
Act's election night party will be held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Westhaven, Auckland. Party leader David Seymour will be joined by most of his close family, plus Act candidates and supporters.

United Future
Leader of United Future Damian Light will be spending the evening with his partner Josh Harding, family and friends as well as United Future candidates and supporters.

University bars
Get your mates together and watch the results come in live at Shadows Bar at the University of Auckland or Victoria University's Hunter Lounge. Shadows have promised politics-themed cocktails, while the folk in Wellington are offering free pizza.

Both events kick off at 6pm.

Brothers Beer, Auckland
This Auckland bar has promised $2 off your first beer if you can prove you have voted. Plus, they will be showing the election on the big screen.
