Two Wairarapa athletes set new centre and Wairarapa records on the second day of the Wellington junior track and field championships held at Newtown Park, Wellington. Steve Paine, from Masterton, again confirmed her reputation as one of the most promising middle distance runners in the country when she clocked 4mins 47.6secsin winning the girls 12yrs 1500m while Ariana Blackwood, of Carterton, set tongues wagging by winning the 13yrs girls 1000m steeplechase in 3min 26.1secs. Wairarapa records were also set by Sam Smith in the boys 7yrs discus, Sam Breig in the 15yrs boys high jump, Tom Quinn in the 12yrs boys 1000m steeplechase and Courtnay Fafeita in the girls 14yrs shot put.
