Woman slashed across face in Napier bar incident

A 19-year-old woman is left "feeling ugly" after being hit in the face with a wine glass at a Napier bar.

Kayla was dancing with her friend at the Thirsty Whale on Saturday night before she was allegedly slashed across the face by a 25-year-old woman.

"We were walking through the crowd to the other side of the bar when someone bumped me and spilt their drink on me. I just moved to the side but this person then smashed her wine glass on my face."

Kayla said once she was hit she could not see anything in front of her because she was covered in blood.

"I just remember being taken into the kitchen and it felt like I was in a murder scene, there was just so much blood everywhere."

The glass left deep cuts to the side of her face, chest and eye lid.

"I went to hospital that night but it took so long so I came back on Sunday evening for surgery."

Kayla was having to be put to sleep while the surgeons worked their magic to fix the marks left on her face.

"There is not too much pain now, I can tolerate it, but I just feel ugly, its horrible."

She said she was not used to being in situations like this as she was a "lover" not a "fighter".

"I am a lover, I don't get myself in to fights or trouble like that. I have never experienced anything like it before."

Kayla didn't see where the woman went after the incident. However, police say they arrested a 25-year-old woman near the Thirsty Whale early yesterday. She will appear in the Napier District Court this week.

Kayla's father, Henry, was shocked to hear what his daughter had gone through.

"It is just sad this is what young people are doing to each other these days. I come from a pretty rough background and to see your daughter left like this after being attacked is so hard."

Thirsty Whale owner Chris Sullivan was not in a position to comment last night.
