A 19-year-old woman sat down in the middle of the road before a car struck and killed her south of Auckland this morning.
The Pukekohe woman was killed and a Manurewa woman in her mid twenties was critically injured when they were hit by the car in the suburb of Beachlands at about 11:10pm last night.
Police said the women were travelling with a man along Whitford's Maraetai road when an argument broke out and they pulled the car onto the side of the road.
A 19-year-old woman walked onto the road and sat down in the middle of the eastbound lane, police said.
The second woman walked over to her persuade her to get off the road while the male remained on the side of the road.
"At the same another vehicle, travelling east, has approached, seen the girls, braked but collided with both of them."
A St John ambulance spokesman said the 19-year-old woman died at the scene and the other was in a "very critical condition".
She was this morning receiving treatment in Middlemore Hospital in South Auckland.
A police spokeswoman said she had multiple injuries and her condition was "not looking good".
The driver of the vehicle that hit the women was breath tested and no trace of alcohol was detected.
The Serious Crash Unit is continuing an investigation.
