Woman killed on pedestrian crossing

An elderly woman is dead after being hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing in Blenheim.

The 83-year-old was struck while crossing the street on Maxwell Rd near St Mary's Church about 8.15pm yesterday. She was taken to Blenheim's Wairau Hospital, but died soon afterward.

Police will not name the victim until next of kin have been advised.

The retired man driving the car was also taken to hospital after the accident, apparently suffering from a heart complaint.

Blenheim CIB are investigating the accident, but will make no further comment on the cause until they have spoken to the driver.
