Woman killed in head-on collision named

A woman who died in a head-on collision near Te Awamutu, 30km south of Hamilton, yesterday has been named.

She was 20-year-old Stephanie Michaele Bates of Hamilton.

Waikato road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman said Miss Bates appeared to have crossed the centreline on a slight bend and hit an oncoming ute.

Miss Bates' death was the 39th on Waikato roads this year, up from 34 at the same time last year, and the fourth in a week.

"It is time motorists take responsibility for the safety of themselves and others on our roads," Mr Tooman said.

"There has been considerable efforts gone into road safety education, enhancements made to the engineering of our roading network and increased numbers of road policing staff.

"To ensure safer journeys for all, there needs to be an attitudinal change so there is no place in our community for those who don't want to share the roads with other motorists with care."
