Woman killed in Haast Pass crash

A woman has died in a car crash on wintry roads in the Haast Pass this morning.

The crash was reported on State Highway 6 shortly after 10am, police said.

It was believed to be a single-vehicle crash but due to the remote location of the incident all other details were yet to be confirmed, police said.

A male occupant of the car was not seriously injured in the crash.

Police urged motorists to drive with "extreme care" in the area due to winter driving conditions in Westland.

A serious crash investigation is underway.

The Haast Pass is a mountain pass that goes through the Southern Alps in the South Island.
