Police have released the name of the woman who died in an accident on the Opotiki side of Traffords Hill north of Gisborne on Monday morning.
She was 59-year-old Jaswinder Kaur, of India.
She died at the scene of injuries sustained when a four-wheel-drive vehicle she was a passenger in
left the road, hit a bank and rolled on to its roof.
Her three-year-old granddaughter remains critically ill in Starship Children's Hospital.
Police believe the vehicle might have hit a patch of ice on the highway and skidded out of control.
