Woman in critical condition after fire

Police are not seeking anyone else after a Palmerston North woman was left critically injured with burns to most of her body.

The 37-year-old woman was rushed to Palmerston North Hospital after an incident in Kelvin Grove about 9.45am today.

The woman was in a critical condition and was to be transferred to Middlemore Hospital in Auckland.

Detective Sergeant Dave Thompson said police and the Fire Service had conducted a scene examination.

Police were fairly certain what had occurred but Mr Thompson would not go into details.

"All I am willing to say is that from the scene examination and other items of evidence that we have assembled to date, we will not be looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.''

Mr Thompson would not comment on whether accelerants were believed to have been used in the fire.

The house suffered some minimal smoke damage.
