In a separate crash, a truck and trailer rolled south of a roundabout connecting SH1 and SH5 in Tirau at 8am.
The driver remained in the cab until power lines touching the truck were moved.
Traffic is being diverted onto SH28, and onto SH5 while the scene is being cleared.
The driver is not seriously injured.
And on SH3 at 4.30pm yesterday, a two car collision near Pio Pio left a 50-year-old New Plymouth man and his wife with multiple injuries.
Both patients were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.
Then at 6pm yesterday, a car carrying a Te Kuiti family of five crashed down an embankment near Otorohanga.
Injuries suffered by the family members ranged from minor to moderate.
The Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported a 46-year-old and two 19-year-olds to Waikato Hospital.
