Police had also received a report of a 35km diesel spill on the road between Mt Bruce and Pahiatua. It was still a hazard and motorists were urged to drive slowly in the area and take extra care.
The road was closed for nearly four hours and diversions were in place via Opaki Rd and Morrisville, causing lengthy delays.
