Woman critical after Christchurch stabbing

A woman is in a critical condition after being stabbed at a house in Christchurch overnight.

The 46-year-old was stabbed in the neck, police said this morning.

Emergency services were called to Hawke St, New Brighton, about 1.15am.

"The woman has undergone surgery at Christchurch Hospital and is in a critical but stable condition,'' police said.

Police officers and forensic staff are at the house, and will examine the scene today.

Police said they believed the attacker may have changed his clothes - and discarded them - before authorities arrived at the scene.

"Police are therefore asking New Brighton residents to check their properties for discarded adult's clothing.

"If you find anything, please do not touch or move it - but call police immediately.''

A 68-year-old man has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

He is known to the woman and will appear in the Christchurch District Court today.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have information relating to the stabbing to come forward.
