Woman charged with murder of newborn baby

A 27-year-old Christchurch woman charged with murdering her new born child has been remanded in custody for a psychiatric report.

Police allege the unemployed woman killed the child between October 1 and November 30.

She appeared before Judge Brian Callaghan in Christchurch District Court today and was remanded to December 22 for a psychiatric report to be prepared under the Criminal Procedures (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act.

She will be held in secure custody at Hillmorton Hospital.

Judge Callaghan granted her interim suppression.
