Woman arrested after police pursuit ends in ramming

A 54-year-old woman was arrested after a police pursuit ended when she allegedly rammed a police car in the northern Hawke's Bay town of Wairoa on Friday night.

She faces charges of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and breach of bail.

Nobody was injured during the chase.

A police vehicle followed the woman after she failed to stop in Lion St about 6.45pm.

It is alleged that at one stage she stopped and attempted to reverse into a police vehicle.

The pursuit continued at speeds of up to 90km/h through residential areas of Wairoa.

"The driver of the fleeing car avoided police by driving through a coned-off area on roadworks," said Detective Jason Thackeray of Wairoa police.

"The vehicle hit a large trench in the roadworks, which caused the vehicle to become airborne," he said.
