A man is in Auckland hospital with serious injuries after he was stabbed in Coromandel town last night.
Emergency service were called to an address in the northern Coromandel Peninsula town around 9.45pm, Detective Glenn Ewing of the Waihi CIB said.
"Police and ambulance staff arrived to find a manand a woman in the kitchen of the home with the man suffering from two stab wounds to his chest," he said.
"It appears the couple have become involved in a physical altercation during a domestic dispute in which it is alleged the woman has stabbed her partner.
"Both are believed to have been drinking alcohol in the build up to what happened."
Mr Ewing said the 31-year-old man was airlifted to Auckland hospital by helicopter, while a 36-year-old woman was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon.
Further charges are likely, he said.
A guard was placed at the address overnight to allow for a forensic scene examination to be conducted today.
Mr Ewing said the incident highlighted the impact alcohol can have in tense domestic situations.
"Police advise anyone fearing for their safety to seek help and contact 111. At this time of year, with financial pressure following on from Christmas, many people find themselves in difficult domestic situations and we advise them where need be to take time out from one another."
