The man looked like he wanted a fight and did not seem to realise what had happened, yelling "who was it? who was it?" as he headed towards the occupants of the other car, he said.
"He had blood p*****g out his head and he was obviously wound up on adrenaline ... it was pretty obvious that he was going to attack us so I said to him in a calm voice and trying to be non-threatening 'are you all right?'." The driver was incoherent and talking nonsense, the bystander claimed.
"When he was coming towards us, I've never seen anyone that furious ... I couldn't turn my back on him."
A friend and teammate of the driver then arrived and tried to calm him down.
The witness said although he did not see the police shoot the driver with a stun gun, he could see why they felt it was necessary.
Life Flight's Westpac rescue helicopter transported the man to Wellington hospital.
He was treated for head and leg injuries and at last report was in a stable condition.
Police said it was likely charges will be laid.
