Winton crash: One person dead, three injured in two-vehicle crash on SH6

A person is dead and three others injured following a two-vehicle crash on a major Southland highway.

The crash occurred on State Highway 6, along the stretch of road known as Great North Rd in Winton, yesterday afternoon.

Emergency services responded to the crash shortly after 3pm.

Police said one person died at the scene, while three others involved in the crash were injured.

One person sustained moderate injuries, while two others were treated for minor injuries.

SH6 was closed between Eglington St and Dejoux Rd until around 8pm last night, NZTA said, with motorists diverted along the township’s side streets.

The Serious Crash Unit was on the scene for several hours.

The exact circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation, with police now working to determine what led to the tragic incident.

Winton is a rural service town in Southland, about 30km north of Invercargill.
