Who is Miller? Search for the homeless man who received newlyweds' touching wedding-day gift

His name is Miller.

Kindness put his face on the front page of the New Zealand Herald this morning, after newlyweds Bronia Tindall and Fabrizio Clementi were photographed giving Miller a slice of their wedding cake outside The Community of St Luke Church in Remuera.

It was an act of humanity that brought their recipient to tears, and swelled the hearts of many.

Barefoot and with his belongings in a bag, Miller appeared to them to be homeless, a situation confirmed to the Herald by homelessness advocates yesterday.

He is known to frequent the Lifewise cafe on Karangahape Rd for breakfast and lunch, but wasn't there when we visited early this morning.

Staff said they kept an eye on him, but he did have the support of Government health and social agencies.

Across the city at the City Mission, Miller's visits appear less frequent, but staff remember him.

He's known for his large feet, feet that frequently take him to Queen St, where he is known to spend time outside the lower Queen St McDonald's.

But he wasn't outside McDonald's when the Herald visited.

Checks around Britomart, and pounding the pavements of Queen St, through Aotea Square, across Elliott St and up to the Sky Tower area, also proved fruitless.

Miller is known to move around.

A reader who contacted the Herald said Miller was known in the Grey Lynn area, while another wrote on Facebook that he attended a mantra meditation programme in the same suburb.

He's also been spotted further west, in Pt Chevalier, and, obviously, Remuera.

Others also wrote on Facebook of the man whose response to an act of kindness touched so many.

Anita Garland-Tepu described Miller as clever and grateful.

"[He] really appreciates every little thing he's given ... likes to have a laugh and of course he loves food. Nice to ... read about him."

Carolyn Tredrea also wrote about Miller on Facebook, calling him a "gentle giant".

"I would give him money and food, he would always say to say hello to my son's friends who worked where he once lived 20 or so years ago ... it's always sad and it hurts when I see the homeless, some are genuine and some aren't but I guess we all have choices in life, whether we make the right ones or not, but good on Bronia and Fabrizio, even if it's just a piece of cake, it's a lot to Miller, god bless living angels."

We don't know Miller's story.

Tindall and Clementi don't know Miller's story - but it did not matter.
