It seems like every cafe these days promises hand-crafted, organic food, but how many see this philosophy through? How many hand-mill their own flour, and cure the bacon and salmon for their sandwiches themselves?
New cafe Craft Kitchen is doing just that, seemingly not to be trendy, but because they
really believe in creating wholesome food.
"We think it's unfair that people are being fed processed food - it's not nutritious," says Morgan McDonald, who opened the cafe with husband Jeff McDonald, both having left corporate jobs. The family business also includes Jeff's father Ian as chef, and Morgan's sister as interior designer.
The upcycled interior and vintage plates feel authentic too. Yes, we've seen this before, but here it seems to come from a simpler place - to keep things within budget and to let the food speak for itself.
With everything made from scratch, don't expect a massive menu. Brightly coloured chalk boards list daily offerings: breakfast features all-day bacon and eggs, pancakes and house muesli, lunch includes roast beef or salmon sandwiches on freshly baked bread, kumara croquettes and fresh soups.
