KEY POINTS:
A group of Russian WWII-era Yak52 fighters streaked above about 20,000 people in West Auckland yesterday, as part of the annual RNZAF open day at Whenuapai Air Base.
The fighters put on an impressive display of formation, flying in cloudless blue skies.
But two F111 fighterbombers, which had made their way from Ohakea Air Base near Palmerston North, made the most ear-piercing impact of the day.
