The list of New Year honours has been released. Among the recipients are golfer Sir Bob Charles, who is now a member of the Order of New Zealand. Restricted to 20 living people at any one time, the Order is our country's highest honour.

Inventor Ray Avery has been made Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to philanthropy.

Jeweller Michael Hill has been knighted for services to business and the arts, while Kiwi cooking icon Alison Holst is now Dame Alison.
