Waterfront workers will refuse to handle cargo they fear contains unwanted pests because of the threats posed to jobs in New Zealand.
They are also worried that foreign snakes or insects could be a health risk for workers.
The Maritime Union yesterday instructed members not to work cargoes suspected of containing biosecurity
risks. General secretary Trevor Hanson said the hazards were a risk to the horticultural and agricultural industries, and also jobs.
He said the action was also to protest against a lack of Government action on the problem, which was threatening the economy.
Mr Hanson said there was a cost-cutting mentality in ports, hurting safety and jobs. "We do not want to see a similar casual attitude in biosecurity."
