Westlake Girls' High victim critically injured in horror crash 'making good progress'

A schoolgirl left fighting for her life after a driver ploughed into a group of children at a bus stop has improved dramatically overnight.

The girl and four other students were injured on Wednesday morning near Westlake Girls' High School on Auckland's North Shore shortly before the school day started.

All of the injured were students from Girls' High and nearby Westlake Boys' High School.

The girl suffered the most significant injuries and was rushed to Starship Hospital.

The Herald has now learned she is to be moved from critical care today to a general ward, and is making good progress.

Police would not comment as their investigation was ongoing.

The youngsters were injured when a car left the road and struck a group on the footpath.

Three other students are stable at Auckland City and Starship hospitals.

A fifth pupil was treated at the scene but did not need to go to hospital.

The driver of the car has been spoken to by police.

He was not injured.
