Wellington's first mobile caravan police base

A police base in a converted caravan will be on the streets of the Wellington region.

Wellington's first custom built mobile police base was unveiled today in Trentham, Upper Hutt.

It is a way of getting police officers in communities and the public engaged, District Commander Sam Hoyle said.

"Our patrol vehicles are essential tools that enable our officers to protect their communities and carry out their duties.

"The idea of a mobile police base expands on this concept bringing the service to the public."

Mr Hoyle said the concept had been effective in Counties Manukau.

Commissioner Mike Bush said the service would be used across the wider Wellington police district.

"The mobile base will travel around the Wellington District spending much of the time in vulnerable communities.

"It will increase visibility and accessibility by providing a venue for the public to meet with officers in their local communities. This mobile base is an engagement tool to connect with communities."

It would be manned by front-line sworn officers who will share the service on a roster.
