Wellington High School student hit by car after school

A Wellington high school student has been hospitalised with moderate injuries after being hit by a car this afternoon.

Police have confirmed the student was injured about 3.30pm near the intersection of Taranaki St and Wallace St.

Wellington High School principal Dominic Killalea told the Herald the incident happened “straight after school”, when a group of students crossed the street.

“They weren’t looking carefully and walked in front of a vehicle that had very little time to stop,” Killalea said in a statement.

“The student was knocked to the ground but we don’t believe she hit her head,” he said.

Killalea said police took statements from witnesses, including the driver.

The student was taken to hospital in an ambulance, for X-rays, he said.

Police said both lanes were blocked just before 4pm.

Wellington Free Ambulance said the patient was taken to Wellington Hospital in a moderate condition.

Wellington High is a co-educational secondary school with about 1300 students, in the inner city suburb of Mt Cook.
