Upper Hutt police operation targets boy racer drivers, 28 infringement notices issued

A planned gathering of boy racers in Wellington was “decisively disrupted” by the police last night.

Police deployed to Upper Hutt where a “significant meet-up” had been organised.

Road policing and public safety units set up multiple checkpoints across the Hutt Valley.

They checked vehicles and driver credentials, and actively worked to prevent the group from settling at known hotspots.

As a result, 28 infringement notices were issued, primarily for vehicle defects, licence breaches, and unsafe modifications.

Inspector Simon de Wit said the operation sent a clear message.

“These groups pose a real risk to public safety and are a source of ongoing frustration for our communities,” he said.

“Their behaviour is reckless, disruptive, and unacceptable.”

Police said officers will continue to take decisive action to prevent such activities and maintain road safety.
