School lockdowns lifted in Porirua, armed police on scene after assault

Armed police are at the scene of an early morning assault that sent nearby schools into lockdown.

One person was moderately injured in the incident in Cannons Creek, Porirua, and police have begun an investigation.

“There is currently an active police situation in Cannons Creek,” Porirua College wrote on Facebook. “For everyone’s safety, the police have asked us to stay home until further notice.

“This means ALL students and staff who are not currently at school need to stay home at the moment.

“Students and staff who are already at school are all safe inside lockable rooms.”

Half an hour later, the school posted that it had been told the incident was over, and it was safe for students and staff to come to school.

Kāpiti-Mana Area Commander Inspector Renée Perkins said there had been an assault, and emergency services were called to Dido Pl just before 7.40am.

“Nearby schools were placed into lockdown while police inquiries were made. Those lockdowns have since been lifted.

“An investigation into the incident is underway.

“A number of police staff remain at the scene, and some are armed as a precaution.”
