Man stabbed in central Wellington, police seek witnesses and footage

An attacker is on the loose after an early morning stabbing in central Wellington over the weekend.

Police say a young man is lucky to be alive after being stabbed multiple times in his arm and back.

The violent central city incident unfolded in a carpark between Wakefield and Tory Streets just before 4.10am on Sunday.

The victim was rushed to Wellington Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and remains hospitalised in a stable condition.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Leitch said any of the stab wounds to his back could have been fatal.

“This could have very easily been a homicide investigation,” Leitch said.

There were a “significant number of people” nearby when the incident happened and police are seeking anyone who saw any part of what unfolded.

The attack happened near Courtenay Pl, Wellington’s nightlife and hospitality strip.

Leitch asked for anyone with footage to contact police as soon as possible by calling 105 and using reference number 251130/5482.
