Wellington: What you need to know following 7.5 earthquake

Roads in and around Wellington remain closed or partially open due to flooding and slips following the 7.5 quake on Monday.

• State Highway 1 is open but down to one lane from Pukerua Bay to Plimmerton due to a slip. Motorists are warned to expect delays during morning rush hour.

• State Highway 2 is open in both directions.

• State Highway 58 (Haywards Hill) between Paremata and Hutt Valley is closed.

• Grays Rd, Block Rd and Paekakariki Hill Rd remain closed

• One lane of Featherston St in the Wellington CBD has been reopened to traffic.

• Molesworth St between Hill and Hawkestone Sts, is closed to traffic and pedestrians

Public Transport

Trains are packed this morning as Wellington commuters cram on board drastically reduced services.

Slips and flooding has led to a skeleton timetable on the Kapiti Line which only goes between Plimmerton and the CBD.

Metlink is warning trains may be very full from Tawa south and may pass through stations without stopping.

Inner city routes that travel on Molesworth St are being diverted.

Services affected include routes 14, 23, 43, 44, 45, 81, 85 and 91, the airport flyer.

Trains on the Kapiti Line have been affected by a slip across the tracks.

A restricted train service is operating between the CBD and Plimmerton every 30 mins
Limited buses are running between Waikanae and Plimmerton.

School buses are running to normal schedules today.

East By West ferries are running to full scheduled timetable.

Building Collapse

An office block on Molesworth St has suffered major structural damage and now at risk of collapse.

Cordons have been set up at intersections at Hill St and Hawkestone St.

A number of buildings close to 61 Molesworth St are off-limits including the Royal Thai Embassy, New Zealand Rugby Union headquarters building, Red Cross offices and Wellington Cathedral of St Paul.

Some schools and early childhood centres in Wellington may not open today due to flood damage.
