He could not say yet whether airport staff expected weather to badly affect flights in the evening.
"There is potential for that to occur later on this evening, that just depends on the level of the wind and the direction of the wind."
Meanwhile, ferry services both across the harbour and between the North and South Islands continue.
A KiwiRail spokesman said the Interislander ferries were still sailing across the strait.
"We are monitoring the situation carefully but so far the weather has not affected Interislander scheduled sailings. However the Kaiarahi has been restricted to freight-only sailings, but we expect her to be fully operational later today," he said.
A East by West Ferries employee said local ferry services were unaffected, and if weather worsened later and services needed to stop they would inform the public.
