Wellington sand dunes need protection says conservationist

Wellington's sand dunes need tender loving care if they are to continue to protect the coastlines, says Department of Conservation botanist John Sawyer.

The dunes were among the region's most threatened ecosystems although there were 12 projects under way to restore them.

"Of the key dunes, 70 to 80 per cent are privately owned. We go out and talk to the owners and find out how we can help them protect the dunes. Many of the owners already know their significance."

Development was a particular threat because it often brought weeds that undermined dunes and led to the fragmentation of dune environments.
