Wellington's northern motorway has reopened after being closed for over an hour, following an accident which left one man seriously injured.
Inspector Steve Darroch said the crash involving a truck and a car happened in the northbound lanes of the motorway, just under the Hobson Street overbridge.
"Igather the truck rear-ended the car and ran over the top of the car, at least partially, and the driver was trapped for ... about half an hour."
After being removed from the vehicle the male driver was taken to Wellington hospital with serious injuries.
Mr Darroch said to his knowledge the man was the car's sole occupant.
The driver of the truck, which was thought to be carrying firewood, was unhurt.
Northbound traffic was diverted onto Tinakori Road, while queues stretched several hundred metres back to the Terrace Tunnel.
The motorway was open again by 2pm, Mr Darroch said.
"There might be a backlog of traffic, but the motorway's cleared and some wood that fell from the truck has been cleared."
Mr Darroch said police were still establishing w hat caused the crash.
