The Government's controversial welfare changes were passed into law last night.
Social Development Minister Paula Bennett says the obligations it places on beneficiaries are fair and reasonable.
Key changes include: sole parents will have to look for part-time jobs when their youngest child turns 6; penalties for non-compliance will become progressively punitive; and abatement rates will be increased to provide work incentives.
Ms Bennett says 15 hours' work a week is a fair ask.
