We have upgraded our search function as part of an ongoing overhaul of the site, making it easier for you to find what you want.
The new engine is powered by Google, the world's number one search engine, to scanall the material on nzherald.co.nz and in our archives.
We decided to change the search after you, our readers, reported growing frustration with not being able to find what you want.
We hope you like it.
Tips:
Welcome to our new search engine. You will notice some changes.
1. To search for an article, simply type in the key words.
2. The new search engine is powered by Google so it scans Herald articles, photos and multimedia for key words. For best search results use several words. It helps the search engine to narrow down what you are looking for.
Example: You want to find an article about broadcaster Paul Holmes appearing on the TV show, Dancing with the Stars.
A search of Holmes and dancing is better than just Paul Holmes.
3. Once you have hit enter, you will get all the results. They are sorted in two ways;
By Date: This ranks all the stories by the date they appeared on the site. A story about the All Blacks which appeared in May 2007, will appear higher than one that appeared in January, 2007.
By Relevance: This search works out what you want and which stories are most relevant. If you were researching articles about the All Blacks playing France, then try a search of All Blacks and France. This will generate articles on that topic.
4. Advanced Searches: If you can't find what you want, try an advanced search.
You could try a search will all of the words or the exact phrase. This will help you narrow down your search.
Or you could try widening the search by using a search with "any of the words". This will search our archives looking for articles that might be what you are after.
5. Results: You can also determine how many results you want to appear. At the moment, it is set to display 10 results but you can set more.
