Batten down the hatches - the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Lusi are expected to bear down on the region this weekend, bringing heavy rainfall and galeforce winds.
MetService says the Wairarapa is expected to have a reasonably fine week until Saturday when the cyclone is expected to bring wild weatherfrom the tropics. Weather forecaster John Law said residents could expect to wake to a very wet Saturday following the high pressure system, which should bring settled weather to the region until then.
"It's going to go downhill and will be pretty unsettled on Saturday with rain from the north. Heavy falls are expected throughout the day."
Rain should gradually ease by Sunday morning but then high winds were expected to batter the region, Mr Law said.
"The rain will gradually easy with galeforce winds on Sunday ... some as high as 100km/h or perhaps more," he said.
He warns people to keep up to date with weather reports on the MetService website and radio stations throughout the weekend. "We advise people to keep up to date with the latest forecast," he said.
