Weekend of crashes and fires

SCORCHED GARDEN: A suspicious fire was started on Queen St, Masterton near the Totara Conference centre carpark in the weekend.

String of fires

A string of fires lit over the weekend is being investigated by police.

On Friday night about 11.30pm, a car was set alight on Lincoln Rd, burning the wall of a building.

Shortly after, a tree on Gordon St in Lansdowne was set on fire.

On Saturday around 1am, there was a fire in a garden on Queen St, near the City Fitness gym, that filled the area with smoke.

All the fires were suspicious, said Garry Nielson, station officer at Masterton Fire station.

Crashes

As well as the fatal accident of a 17-year-old Pahiatua boy on Mt Bruce on Sunday morning, there was a series of minor crashes during the weekend.

A car and a truck collided at Gordon St and Te Ore Ore Rd on Friday morning.

Nobody was injured.

On Saturday night, the driver of a car crashed into a paddock on Chester Rd near Carterton.

There was another crash in Eketahuna on SH2 about 2am on Sunday morning leaving the occupants with minor injuries.
