Weather watch for capital

Strong winds and heavy rain are on the way for Wellington.

MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Marlborough, Wellington and the Wairarapa from this evening until tomorrow afternoon.

Northwest gales are likely in exposed areas, with the possibility of severe gales about hill top locations and rainfall rates in the Tararua Range are also expected to increase over the next 24 hours.

Residents have been advised to keep up to date, in case the forecast is upgraded from a watch, to a wind and rain warning.
