Weather forecast: drizzly start to the week follows a summery weekend

Most of the country is being hit with some drizzly weather to start the week following the sunny weather which graced most regions over the weekend.

Showers were expected in Auckland and Hamilton as well as in New Plymouth down to Wellington.

The South Island can also expect a wet start to the week.

Temperatures in Auckland and Wellington will peak at around 17C, while Christchurch and Dunedin have an expected high of 14C.

Eastern regions such as Gisborne were in for a summery day in comparison, with sun and temperatures hitting 21C.

Auckland's Northcote Point Wharf was closed this morning due to weather.

Buses were operating between Northcote Point and Birkenhead Wharf as an alternative for commuters.

MetService meteorologist Sarah Haddon said we should see more settled weather as the week progresses.

Showers would clear over most parts of the North and the South Island to make way for a sunny weekend in most areas, but temperatures remained around the same.

"We're moving towards summer so overall things will start getting warmer, but there's no way I can say the cold is completely gone", Haddon said.

"There could be another southerly kick."
