The country is in for a deserved few days of settled weather, but a system brewing near Australia might just wreck our weekends.

Tropical Cyclone Linda has formed to the northeast of Queensland and could move closer to New Zealand as a former cyclone by the weekend, bringing rain to the North Island.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology named the Category 1 cyclone yesterday afternoon.

In its latest update this morning the cyclone was shifting south-southwest over the Coral Sea, and was expected to remain offshore of the southern Queensland coast.

Dangerous surf is expected to hit the Queensland coast today and tomorrow.

Updated severe weather warning for; dangerous surf conditions from Wednesday and abnormally high tides from Thursday. Affecting #FraserCoast, #SunshineCoast and #GoldCoast beaches. This is due to tropical #CycloneLinda. For current warnings visit: https://t.co/Wv7JMyuSS2 pic.twitter.com/uzXlDounhM

At this stage it did not look like Linda would bring anything "too severe" to New Zealand, MetService meteorologist Nick Zachar said.

"It is a pretty low grade, Category 1, and is really only weakening from here out.

"Over the next 24 to 36 hours we expect them to reclassify it as a former cyclone."

After moving closer to Australia's East Coast, Linda is expected to track southeast towards New Zealand as a former cyclone.

"There are different models, but right now we are not expecting too severe weather for New Zealand. It could enhance rainfall, but we are not expecting any severe impacts."

As Tropical Cyclone Hola moves further away from New Zealand, a ridge of settled weather has shifted over the country.

The weather across the country today is looking to be relatively fine, with temperatures in the low 20s.

"Most of the country can expect a pretty nice day.

"There are still a few showers from Taranaki to Northland, but the whole North Island and eastern South Island should be in for a fine, sunny day."

A brief downpour at about 4.30am in Auckland should be all the rain the city sees today.

Showers will be sticking around the West Coast and coastal Southland, including Invercargill.

The settled weather will continue in the North Island tomorrow, but a system from the southwest will start to hit the bottom of the South Island tomorrow evening.

It will make its way up the country on Friday, spreading rain from Southland and Fiordland up the South Island, reaching the central North Island by midday.

It will shift over the rest of the country by Saturday, dropping temperatures by 5 to 6 degrees as it goes.
