Weather: Clear skies ahead this weekend

Apart from a few showers here and there, most of the country is in for blue skies and light winds this weekend.

A broad ridge was spreading over New Zealand, MetService meteorologist Robb Kerr said.

"It's parked up already, there are pretty much clear skies right across the country right now.

"There is just a bit of cloud around central New Zealand, and the northern part of the west coast. There are a few showers also drifting over eastern parts of Northland."

However, these showers were set to ease this afternoon, he said.

Meanwhile, a "broad high" was set to stick around right through the weekend, Mr Kerr said.

"Although there is a small trough that's offshore Bay of Plenty at the moment, and that is set to swing around and push a few showers and some northeast wind across the Auckland region into Saturday before clearing Saturday night," he said.

Apart from this, most areas across the country were set to be fine with light winds on Saturday and Sunday.

Aucklanders were in for a nice few days with highs of 14C today and tomorrow, and 16C on Sunday.

There would be a few cloudy periods on Saturday as the trough came through from the Bay of Plenty."That's going to bring some scattered showers in the morning, and they'll ease in the evening.

"We'll see some more fine spells on Sunday across the Auckland region with some northeast breezes, and then they'll clear out late on Sunday night into Monday morning and it will become fine on Monday.

"Looking ahead to next week, a front would approach the South Island early on Monday, and that would push up through the central part of the country late Monday, and early Tuesday.

"This will bring rain to the western parts of the South Island on Monday, and it's going to sweep across the North Island on Tuesday bringing rain to those particularly on the northern half of the North Island on Tuesday."
